Yesterday, Nintendo released ten NES games free to Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors who bought the system previous to the price drop on August 12th 2011. One of those games is the classic Metroid NES. The ten games were released this morning for Europeans, but Japan and the United States had the ability to download them earlier than announced. The game looks great on the handheld, if you owned Metroid NES on the Gameboy Advance you should know what to expect.
To download the games, enter the 3DS eShop on the 3DS home screen. From there, scroll left to Settings / Other. From there, scroll down to Your Downloads (or Titles You’ve Downloaded). If you are eligible as a Nintendo 3DS Ambassador, your ten free games should be in the list of already downloaded titles. You simply click “Redownload” to download the games to your system. If you’re a member of the United States and want to check your eligibility to the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program, you can do so here.
Be sure to download the Nintendo Ambassador Certificate which can also be found in the downloads section. In the future, this will give notifications on the release of the ten free GBA games for Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors, one of which will be Metroid Fusion. Ensure that Notifications are switched on.
People who have downloaded Metroid NES on the 3DS have discovered that if you type the following code into the password screen:
ENGAGE RIDLEY
MOTHER FUCKER
The game will completely crash and you will be forced to restart the system by holding down the power button. This is quite humourous but I am sure multiple codes could cause the same effect with some experimentation. I have yet to test the code on the original Metroid NES game and other ports of the game, but I have tried the code myself on the 3DS and can confirm it works, much to my amusement…
